What Is a Groin Strain?


A groin strain occurs when the muscles of the inner thigh, commonly called the adductors, become overstretched or torn during sudden movement or forceful activity. These muscles help bring the leg toward the midline of the body and play an important role in walking, running, cutting, kicking, skating, changing direction, and stabilizing the pelvis.


Groin strains are common in sports that involve acceleration, deceleration, sprinting, lateral movement, rapid direction changes, kicking, or skating. This may include soccer, hockey, football, basketball, tennis, rugby, martial arts, running, and gym training. A strain may happen suddenly during a sharp movement, or it may develop gradually from repeated overload and poor recovery.


Symptoms can range from mild tightness to sharp groin pain. Some individuals feel pain deep in the inner thigh, while others notice discomfort closer to the pubic region or front of the hip. More significant strains may cause swelling, bruising, weakness, or difficulty walking normally.


A groin strain should be properly assessed, especially if pain is severe, follows a clear popping sensation, causes significant bruising, or does not improve with appropriate care.
